The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean School Bus Program (CSB) will provide $5 billion over five years (FY 2022-2026) to replace existing school buses with clean school bus models. School districts in all 50 states are eligible to apply for funding, which is provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. To date, over $1.8 billion has been awarded to 638 school districts, which will replace 5,094 school buses with electric and clean school buses.
How Does the EPA CSB Program Work?
The EPA CSB program opened in 2022, and there have been three rounds of funding: one competitive grant round and two lottery rebate rounds.
Round 1 was a lottery with a relatively simple application process that awarded about $1B in rebates, while Round 2 was a competitive process with a complex application distributed over $400M in grants. Round 3 provided over $875M in rebates using a lottery-based system.
The CSB program is currently closed. However, the EPA’s Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Program (CHDV) is now open. Learn more about the CHDV program here.
